HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-02-89 MINUTES OF OCOEE CEMETERY ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING
HELD ON MARCH 2, 1989
PRESENT: Chairman Sam Woodson, Nell Minor, Betty Hager, Bill
Breeze, Sharon Levine', and Commissioner Rusty Johnson; Street
Supervisor Buddy Elmore, Garry Smith, and Deputy Clerk Green.
ABSENT: None.
Chairman Woodson called the meeting to order at 7:30 P.M..
Minutes of the February 2nd meeting were distributed for approval.
Commissioner Johnson had been erroneously listed as having been
present. He had been out of town. The minutes were approved as
corrected.
Copies of the revised Rules and Regulations for the Cemetery
were distributed. The clerk pointed out the addition of the
floral regulations and the signature segment. After some
discussion, it was suggested that Number 1, General Rules, be
changed to add, "or the Chief's designee" following "Chief of
Police ". Under the Monuments section, the following insertion was
suggested following the second sentence: "A permit must be
obtained and a fee paid before placing a monument. The monument
shall be placed under the supervision of a City employee." Also
under the Monuments section, the sentence beginning "After
sufficient time" was changed to "After thirty (30) days ". Mrs.
Minor moved to change the Cemetery Rules and Regulations as noted
above and to bring them back to the Committee before presentation
to the Board of City Commissioners. In further discussion, it was
agreed that the amended rules could be mailed to members who could
phone the clerk with their approval or disapproval in order to
permit placement on the Commission Agenda of April 4th, if
approved by all members. Sharon Levine seconded the motion and
approval was unanimous.
Sharon Levins reported that she had been contacted by Dawn
Stiles of the office staff of Ocoee Middle School. Ms. Stiles had
told her that O.M.S. children were using the Cemetery to "play
hookey" and to have fights after school. Section 7 -11, (e) of the
Cemetery Code stipulates: "Children under sixteen years of age
shall not be permitted within the cemetery or its buildings unless
accompanied by an adult." Members suggested that we ask the City
Manager to deal with the problem.
In discussion about land for expansion of the Cemetery, Buddy
Elmore commented that some of the sewer department land or
property adjacent to a private cemetery off Clarcona Road might
be possible sites. He added that including a mausoleum in future
plans for the Cemetery might be advisable and said that City
Manager Shapiro would be providing the Committee with mausoleum
information.
von' Chairman Woodson asked if there were anything we needed to do
at the current cemetery. Mr. Elmore said that it might be

possible to add a mausoleum in the current Cemetery. Commissioner
Johnson suggested that we look into that possibility.
The next meeting was scheduled for Thursday, April 6th at
7:30 P.M. in the conference room in City Hall.
The meeting adjourned at 8:45 P.M..
Respectfully submitted,
Marian Green, Deputy Clerk
vr.
