HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-25-12 MINUTES OF THE CITIZEN ADVISORY COUNCIL OF THE OCOEE POLICE DEPARTMENT MEETING HELD OCTOBER 25, 2012 CALL TO ORDER Chairman McKey called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. in the Training Room of the Police Department, located at 646 Ocoee Commerce Parkway. Chairman McKey led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Vice -Chair Laney said the opening prayer; the roll was called and a quorum was declared. PRESENT: Chairman McKey, Vice -Chair Laney, Treasurer Wilsen, Members Ball, Santana, and Zielinski (late arrival- 7:12 p.m.). Also present were Staff- Liaison Sgt. Nylander, and Recording Clerk Turner. ABSENT: Member Yost (unexcused), and Ex- Officio Member Commissioner Johnson (unexcused). Approval of CACOPD Minutes for July 26, 2012 Vice -Chair Laney made a motion to accept the minutes for July 26, 2012. seconded by Member Ball. Motion carried, with Treasurer Wilsen and Member Santana abstaining from vote. Update on Community Picnic Staff - Liaison Sgt. Nylander stated the event was very successful, and that Marco's Pizza, a community partner, provided free pizza at the event. He continued to say that Sysco provided most of the food for the event, and to show appreciation, the police department will honor Sysco with a plaque at one of the Commission Meetings. Quarterly Update on Gun Safety Class, and S.A.F.E. Staff - Liaison Sgt. Nylander informed the board that the upcoming Gun Safety Classes are scheduled for November 17`" and December 15 He continued to say that for the moment, there is not a S.A.F.E. Class scheduled. Staff - Liaison Sgt. Nylander briefed Member Santana on the Gun Safety and S.A.F.E. classes, as he is a newly appointed member. Update on Neighborhood Restorative Justice (NRJ) Chairman McKey stated there are two (2) or three (3) new cases, and about three (3) completions. He continued to explain that it is a ninety (90) day diversionary program sponsored by the 9 Judicial Circuit Court and the police department. He also stated that the program is always looking for volunteers. Activity Report Staff - Liaison Sgt. Nylander provided an activity report for the period of July 1 through October 21, 2012: • 12, 379 calls for service • 599 9 -1 -1 hang -up calls • 182 burglaries CACOPD Meeting October 25, 2012 He explained to the board that the detectives are working hard on solving the burglary cases, and it is believed that the burglaries are committed by the same criminals. Board discussion ensued regarding the activity report. Update on Anti - Bullying Campaign Vice -Chair Laney informed the board that the Fat Boy Chronicles is a film based on a true story regarding bullying, and teaches coping strategies to children. She continued to say that a local hospital may partner with Mike Buchanan, the producer of Fat Boy Chronicles, and that it would be a good idea to show the film at the Spring Fling event. Camera Surveillance System Treasurer Wilsen informed the board of his wishes to support camera installation in neighborhoods to assist the police department with catching criminals. He continued to say that the CACOPD should approach the commission and express their support for the cameras. Chairman McKey asked Staff- Liaison Sgt. Nylander to speak with Chief Brown regarding approaching the commission, and how best to do so. Chairman McKey also asked Treasurer Wilsen to draft a letter and e -mail it to Staff - Liaison Sgt. Nylander for Chief Brown's approval. Member Ball stated that the board could approach the Commission as indicated in the Board's By -Laws. Board discussion ensued regarding camera surveillance in neighborhoods. Treasurer Wilsen made a motion to support a letter of expression in favor of surveillance cameras, seconded by Member Zielinski. Motion passed unanimously. Founders' Day and Poker Run Staff - Liaison Sgt. Nylander informed the board that the Poker Run is scheduled for October 27, 2012. It will begin at The Sandwich Shop with the first motorcycle out at 10:00 a.m., and will end at The Bar. He continued to say that Founders' Day is scheduled for November 2 and 3rd 2012. He stated that Community Affairs will be there with the Explorers to fingerprint children, and he will sill set up the CACOPD tent. Update on Neighborhood Safety Summit Vice -Chair Laney informed the board that she made several contacts while attending the 2012 Southern States Crime Prevention Conference, and feels that attending the conference will help with the Summit. Chairman McKey suggested the Summit relay information as provided at the conference, but in a more condensed format. Vice -Chair Laney stated that she will work on an agenda. Board discussion ensued regarding the benefits of a Neighborhood Safety Summit. Quarterly Award for Officer The board discussed the nominations for the Officer of the Quarter, Third Quarter, 2012, Award. A motion was made by Treasurer Wilsen to select the officer in Nomination #2 for the Officer of the Third Quarter, 2012, Award, seconded by Vice -Chair Laney. Motion passed unanimously. Staff - Liaison Sgt. Nylander revealed the names of the nominees: Nomination #1- Detective Loretta Ganoe Nomination #2- Officer Teddy Levin 2 CACOPD Meeting October 25, 2012 Staff - Liaison Sgt. Nylander stated the board will receive an e -mail invitation for the presentation of awards.
