HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 99-17 RESOLUTION NO. 99-17 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF OCOEE, FLORIDA; IN SUPPORT OF CREATING A VISION AND IMPLEMENTING PROGRAMS FOR FUTURE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE LAKE APOPKA BASIN THAT CAN FURTHER STATE AND REGIONAL EFFORTS TO RESTORE THE LAKE'S WATER QUALITY, AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, Ocoee is committed to preserving and enhancing the natural resources, and to furthering the area's economic development; and WHEREAS, Ocoee is supportive of efforts to coordinating its planning and development activities with those of neighboring jurisdictions, regional agencies and state government; and WHEREAS, the State of Florida has invested in excess of $100 million toward restoration of Lake Apopka' s water quality and environmental health; and WHEREAS, the St. John's River Water Management District is finalizing its buyout of farmlands along the northern shore of the lake and is proceeding with the preparation of a development and management plan for those lands; and WHEREAS, it is critical that the public investment made toward restoration of Lake Apopka not be jeopardized by poorly planned and uncoordinated growth that may reverse or negate efforts to improve its water quality; and WHEREAS, the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council, the Friends of Lake Apopka and the St. John's River Water Management District have together initiated a community-based regional planning program to explore the opportunities offered by the lake's restoration. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF OCOEE, FLORIDA SUPPORTS THE LAKE APOPKA PLANNING INITIATIVE TO ACHIEVE THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES: SECTION I. Assist III the restoration of the Lake's water quality and basin's environmental health. SECTION II. Promote a full range of recreational activities and opportunities for the public within the basin's communities, the region and the state. 1 SECTION III. Promote and facilitate economic development activities compatible with a vision for the basin, especially ecotourism and recreation based upon private sector initiatives. SECTION IV. Facilitate cross-jurisdictional coordination and cooperation among local, regional and state agencies. SECTION V. Adopt minimum design guidelines to ensure both new public and private development activities are consistent with the basin vision and restoration of the Lake.
