RE:
Expenditure of Police Forfeiture Funds
ISSUE
Should the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners authorize the Police Department to grant
$500.00 from its police forfeiture account to Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), Central Florida Chapter?
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Florida State Statutes 932.7055 allows local law enforcement agencies to grant funds from their forfeiture
accounts to support any drug treatment, drug abuse education, drug prevention, crime prevention, safe
neighborhood, or school resource officer program(s). The local law enforcement agency has the discretion to
determine which program(s) will receive the designated proceeds. Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD)
partners with law enforcement agencies in educating the public about the dangers of DUI, serves as an advocate
for victims of impaired drivers, petitions law makers on behalf of victims and law enforcement, and supports law
enforcement with its enforcement efforts. Because of the services they provide to law enforcement and the
community; and because duplication of these programs by the Ocoee Police Department is not possible, the
Ocoee Police Department recommends granting $500.00 from its forfeiture account to Mothers Against Drunk
Drivers, Central Florida Chapter.
There is approximately $8000.00 unencumbered in the police forfeiture account.
