HomeMy WebLinkAbout12-01-2016 Minutes • CITY OF OCOEE Minutes of the Human Relations Diversity Board Regular Meeting Held December 1, 2016 I:CALL TO ORDER HRDB meeting was called to order by Chair Crown at 7:08 p.m. in Room 109 at Ocoee City Hall located at 150 North Lakeshore Drive,Ocoee, Florida. A. Pledge of Allegiance and Moment of Personal Reflection: Lt.Wagner led the board in the pledge of allegiance to the U.S.flag;followed by Chair Crown asking that we each take a moment for personal reflection. B. Roll Call and Determination of Quorum: Ex Officio Member Wright performed roll call and determined that there was a quorum (6). In attendance at the time meeting was called to order and roll call was taken were: Members Calloway, Maxwell, Hershaw, Dawkins, Crown, and Brown; Ex Officio Member Wright. Member Foster arrived at 7:20; Member Anderson-Robinson arrived at 7:25; Member Briggs arrived at 8:00 and Member Vines arrived at 8:08. Quorum of 10 by 8:08 p.m. Absent was Ex Officio Member Keller. C. Review of Excused Absences: None to review. D. Review Agenda for Tonight's Meeting: Chair Crown reviewed the agenda for the night. E. Review of Minutes: Minutes.of the November 3, 2016 meeting were reviewed. Motion to approve minutes made by Member Calloway, seconded by Member Maxwell and unanimously approved. II:BUSINESS FOR DISCUSSION A. Comments from Citizens/Public: Guests Bishop Dereck Hutchins, New Life Church of God in Christ and Pamela Gordon,event planner for the church were attending the meeting because they were concerned about the parade going in front of their church and also would like to be involved and participate in the parade. Their choir has volunteered to sing.They will email a video of their choir singing to Ex Officio Member Wright. Also present were Lt. Bill Wagner and Deputy Chief Plasencia, Ocoee Police Department to discuss parade. B. Budget Report: Ex Officio Member Wright reported that as of this month the balance is$18,388.93 . C. Art Festival: Member Hershaw asked if any of the schools were participating. Ocoee High School has said they would participate. Member Brown and Deputy Chief Plasencia requested a copy of the art festival letter that was emailed to the principals. Ex Officio Member Wright will email the letter to them. Member Brown said he would forward the letter to the art teachers at each school. Deputy Chief Plasencia offered to give the letter to Ocoee's School Resource Officers and have them hand-deliver the letter to the principals. Also discussed contacting the private/charter schools. D. MLK Parade: • Member Dawkins reported that there were maps for the parade • Request was made that we have two radios • Ex Officio Member Wright will contact Parks and Recreation Director to request use of bus for transport back and forth before the road closing • Citrus Elementary will have the gate opened at 7:00 a.m. • Reverend Dorsey said that he would do the invocation and benediction • Member Calloway will get a singer for the national anthem • Grand Marshall: Representative Val Demmings, Mayor Vandergrift, Bishop Derek Hutchins or Barbara Jenkins(superintendent of Orange County Schools). Ex Officio Member Wright will contact Representative Demmings first. If unavailable will contact others listed • "Embracing Diversity"will be the theme,which was unanimously approved • Member Maxwell to reconfirm that Reverend Stamper will be the keynote speaker • Change the orientation of the stage, so the sun isn't in the audience's eyes • Members volunteered to help • Parade line up was discussed • Parade registration form is on the city's website • A$500 sponsorship check was from received West Orange Montessori Charter School • Ex Officio Member Wright distributed the parade Tasks List and the 2016 MLK Parade program E. Cemetery: Support Services Director Butler has received a scope of services for surveying in the amount of $2,203.00,which is coming from CIP budget. Approved unanimously. Members discussed placing an "old tombstone from 1910" in the African American Memorial. Member Calloway made a motion to include headstone. Seconded by Member Hershaw. Unanimously approved. F. Other Business: None G. Set Next Agenda: Chair Crown, along with input from the board, set the agenda for the next meeting,which will be held on January 5, 2017, said Agenda was established as listed below: I.
