MEMORANDUM
TO: he Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners
FROM: ay Brenner, Public Works Direc r -
im Beech, Recreation Directo 4
DATE: une 11, 1993
SUBJECT: OOTBALL FIELD SODDING
Pursuant to Commissioner Johnson's request,we have met with].P. Carris, Horticulturist Consultant,
and by telephone with Don Hurt's office, Supervisor of Field Maintenance, Orange County Parks and
Recreation, that resulted in the following information:
(1) that pending the results of the soil and water tests, which should be returned within 2 weeks,
it appears that a 6" - 8" topsoil shall be required prior to sodding;
(2) that the vegetation currently on the field must be eradicated and rototilled prior to placement
of the topsoil;
(3) that 90 cubic yards of Colloidal Phosphate shall be rototilled into the topsoil prior to the
placement of the sod;
(4) that although Mr. Carris recommends Bermuda grass, our inability to have crews necessary
to maintain the field on a high maintenance basis and to keep children from utilizing the field
other than for football requires us to utilize Bahia grass;
(5) that there is currently a purchase order to Floriturf Incorporated for $3,600 worth of sod
which will cover the entire field. The topsoil mentioned above will require approximately
$8,000 and the Colloidal Phosphate will cost an additional $1,500. This additional $9,500
has not been budgeted and subject to any economic help from the football program would
be required to be taken from Contingency; and
(6) while the sprinkler system is covering the field at 100%, the water test may show whether or
not the well currently being used there has a chemical content that would not be good for
growth. This is to advise that when the test results are provided to us, additional funding may
be required.
Therefore, we respectfully recommend that $9,500 be allocated at your next Commission Meeting
of June 15, 1993, and upon approval, that we plant sod utilizing City crews and any football help
after the treatment of the field and the return of the test results.

Attention Alice Tate-Barnett
Subject; Football field renovations .
Pending the results of the soil and water tests that
have been sent off , This is my recommendations for this
time .
Proper preparation is critical to the establishment Of
a quality turf . It will determine how quickly the Turf will
become established and it ' s long term maintenance
requirements .
I have sent off samples of the water for evaluation .
This is for our information as a source of the high pI-I
which the field has . I have also sent off soil samples to
get an analysis of the nutrients present and any 'offending
minerals . There is also a soil sample to find out about
nematodes which may be there because of the bermuda-grass in
the field ' s past .
For now the existing vegetation should be killed out as
far as possible . Round up should do this job. After this I
recommend the application of 45 to 90 Cu Yds of Colloidal
Phosphate To be rototi_lled into the top 6-8 inches of soil .
This will increase the water holding capacity of the soil as
well as the basic exchange capacity which will enhance its
response to fertilization . This will help the soil resist
compaction which will occur as the field is used . Folowing
this and tyre final grading it may be necessary to fumigate
the field . This will wait until the results of the tests .
Sports research has shown that injuries are fewer and
less severe on Bermuda-grass than on other southern grasses .
I have been told that lawsuits are being brought because of
poorel_y maintained playing fields . I do not have this
information first hand but it is something to consider .
Regardless of the kind of grass the City decides to go with
the preparation of the soil is critical . •
If you go along with my recommendation to use Bermuda-
grass on the field you should consider money in tthe budget
to maintain it properly . This maintenance will consist of
frequent(monthly ) fertilizations and mowing with a reel-type
mower at a height to be determined but at no time removing
more than 1/3 of the existing blade . This can mean mowing 3
times a week during the summer and at least weekly mowings
in the winter .
There will. be another report when the test results ._ are
in .
