CITY ENGINEER/UTILITIES DIRECTOR 150 N.LAKESHORE DRIVE•OCOEE,FLORIDA 34761 (407)656-2322 I MEMORANDUM DATE: July 15, 1993 TO: Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners FROM: James W. Shira, P.E. City Engineer/Utilit. s Director SUBJECT: Computer Purchase Authorization Several years ago, the city purchased hand-held data acquisition units for the water meter readers to use. As each water meter register is read, the reading is stored in the unit by means of a small keyboard on the face of the unit. After all the meters in a section of the city have been read, the hand-held units are brought back to city hall where the stored data is transferred to the NCR computer to be used to calculate utility bills. In order to transfer the data from the hand-held unit to the NCR, the data must be passed through a desktop computer. We have been using an old desktop computer for this, but it no longer works properly. An NCR computer technician informed us that it was not economically feasible to repair this computer. In order to keep the meter reading function operating, we have borrowed a desktop computer that was purchased for use by the GIS operator, and are using it to run the data transfer program. This leaves us without a computer for the GIS operator. It is important for this person to have a desktop computer so that mapping and data files which are received from Orange County in the GIS format can be converted to a format usable by other city departments, as well as to convert subdivision drawing files which we receive from developers, into the GIS format. The cost to replace the "borrowed" computer with one suitable for use by the GIS operator will be approximately $2,800.00. I am requesting that the City Commission authorize a transfer from both the Water arid Wastewater Reserve for Contingency accounts in the amount of $1,400 each, to the Water and Wastewater Computer Equipment/Software accounts, to fund the purchase of a replacement desktop computer for the GIS operator. The current balances in the two contingency accounts are $47,434. 00 and $332,604.00 respectively. THE PRIDE OF WEST ORANGE 0
