Weldon, Pastor 410 N. First Street Ocoee, Florida 34761 September 2, 1993 Attention; Jean Grafton, Chief City Clerk: In a meeting on August 30th, with City Manager Elis Shapiro, a group from 'We Care ' , discussed the opportunity of advertising and serving Ocoee, with a Suicide Prevention crisis phone line. This group, 'We Care ' , met with his approval and he felt it would be good to present to city commissioners. His suggestion was that a representative should briefly speak, concerning what services they would provide to the community. Mr. Shapiro suggested the date for them to get on the 'agenda' would be the third Tuesday, September 21st. We are hereby, requesting that time be allotted on the 'agenda' for this purpose. The groups ' name is 'We Care' and their representative will be introduced by Pastor David Day, President of the West Orange Ministerial Association. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, .151. Lester G. THE MYTHS Myths and fallacies tend to arise and circulate about subjects our society has deemed taboo. Present knowledge refutes the following myths. 1. People who commit suicide always leave notes. FACT: Most people don't leave notes. Only a small percentage leave any type of explanations about why they've chosen to kill themselves. 2. People who commit suicide do not warn others. FACT: Out of 10 people who kill themselves, eight have given definite clues to their intentions. They leave numerous clues and warnings to others, although some of their clues may be non-verbal or difficult to detect. 3. People who talk about suicide are only trying to get attention. They won't really do it. FACT: WRONG! Few commit suicide without first letting someone else know how they feel. Those who are considering suicide give clues and warnings as a cry for help. In fact, most seek out someone to rescue them. Over 70% who do threaten to commit suicide either make an attempt or complete the act. 4. Once someone has already decided to commit suicide, nothing is going to stop them. Suicidal people clearly want to die. FACT: Most of the time, a suicidal person is ambivalent about the decision;they are torn between wanting to die and wanting to live. Most suicidal individuals don't want death; they just want the pain to stop. Some people, seeing evidence of two conflicting feelings in the individual may interpret the action as insincerity, saying, "he really doesn't want to do it." People's ability to help is hindered if they don't understand the common suicidal characteristic of ambivalence. 5. Once the emotional state improves, the risk of suicide is over. FACT: The highest rates of suicide occur within about three months of an apparent improvement in a severely depressed state. Therefore, an improvement in emotional state does not mean a lessened risk. 6. After a person has attempted suicide, it is unlikely they will try again. FACT: People who have attempted suicide are very likely to try again. 80% of people who commit suicide have made at least one previous attempt. 7. Don't mention suicide to someone who's showing signs of severe depression. It will plant the idea in their minds and they will act on it. FACT: Many depressed people have already considered suicide as an option. Discussing it openly helps the suicidal person sort through the problems and generally provides a sense of relief and understanding. It is one of the most helpful things you can do. 8. An unsuccessful attempt means that the person wasn't serious about ending their life. FACT: The attempt in and of itself is the most important factor; not the method. .......... .. .. .................... ..................... .................. ................... WARNING SIGNS There is no typical suicide victim. Almost everyone at some time in his or her life thinks about committing suicide. It happens to young and old, rich and poor. People having a crisis often perceive their dilemma as inescapable and feel an utter loss of control. Fortunately there are some common warning signals which, when identified and acted upon, can save your life or the life of someone you know. CO A Suicidal Person May: Talk about committing suicide Have trouble eating or sleeping drastic changes in behavior oExperience Withdraw from friends and/or social activities Lose interest in hobbies, work, school, etc. Prepare for death by making out a will and final arrangements Give away prized possessions Have attempted suicide before Take unnecessary risks Have had a recent severe loss _. Be preoccupied with death and dying Lose interest in their personal appearance Have a history of substance abuse May have increased use of alcohol or drugs A Suicidal Person May Feel or Experience: Can't stop the pain Can't think clearly Can't make.decisions Can't see any way out Can't sleep,-eat or work Can't stop feelings of hopelessness Can't see a future without pain Can't see themselves as worthwhile Can't get someone's attention Can't seem to get control Can't cope with overwhelming anxiety Talking Helps: Know Who to Call for the Support You Need KNOW THE FACTS 1. Suicide is preventable. Most suicide victims do not want to die. 2. Talking about suicide does not cause someone to be suicidal. 3. The suicide rate is higher for the elderly than any other age group. 4. Substance abuse, especially alcoholism, is strongly related to suicide and suicide attempts. 5. Individuals with a mental disorder are about 5 times more likely to engage in suicidal behaviors than those without such a diagnosis.' 6. More than 80% of people communicate their intent to kill themselves before they attempt to do so. Ways to Help the Suicidal Person *Listen. Do not leave the person alone without human support. *Know the warning signs. *Ask if he or she is thinking about suicide. *Be non judgmental. Don't debate the issues of suicide. *Be accepting of feelings. *Offer empathy, not sympathy. *Don't be sworn to secrecy. Seek support. *Don't offer empty words of reassurance. *Do offer alternatives or hope that alternatives can be found. *Remove available methods when possible. *Take action. Know who to call.
