HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-25-18 Minutes MINUTES OF THE CITIZEN ADVISORY COUNCIL OF THE OCOEE POLICE DEPARTMENT MEETING HELD JANUARY 25, 2018 On Thursday January 25, 2018 the Citizens Advisory Council for the Ocoee Police Department will meet at 7:00 p.m. in the Commission Chambers at City Hall, 150 N. Lakeshore Drive. All interested parties are invited to attend. January 25, 2018 7:00 p.m. CALL TO ORDER: In the absence of Chairperson Santana, Member Laney calls the meeting to order. Member Laney leads the invocation. Member Ball leads the Pledge of Allegiance. PRESENT: David Ball, Victoria Laney, Terry Titus, Cheryl King, Marc Bray, Cory Garone, Penny Christian. Also present are Sgt. Mireya Iannuzzi and Recording Clerk Maria Serrano. ABSENT: Jose Santana (absent unexcused) Adrian Hill (absent excused), Braundon Vines (absent excused) Warren Lewis (absent excused) QUORUM: Declared by Recording Clerk Serrano. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES FROM THE OCTOBER 27, 2017 MEETING: Member Garone motions to approve the minutes, Member Laney seconds. The motion carries unanimously. BOARD OFFICER APPOINTMENT: The board opens with nominations for Chairperson. Member Titus nominates Member Laney, Member Bray seconds. Member King nominates Member Garone, Member Ball seconds. Discussion ensues. The board votes 4/7 and Member Garone is elected Chairperson. Vice-chairperson nominations begin with Member Bray nominating Member King. Member Garone seconds the nomination. Member King nominates Member Christian, Member Christian seconds the nomination. Discussion ensues. The board votes 5/7 and Member King is elected Vice-Chairperson. Treasurer nominations begin with Member Garone nominating Member Ball, Member Ball refuses appointment. Member King nominates Member Hill, Member Ball seconds. Member Garone nominates Member Laney, Member Christian seconds. The board votes 4/7 and Member Laney is elected Treasurer. OFFICER OF THE FOURTH QUARTER: Chairperson Garone opens discussion. Member King nominates entry #3, Chairperson Garone seconds that nomination. Member Bray nominates entry #2, Member Laney seconds that nomination. Discussion ensues. The board votes 6/7 for entry#2, Ofc. Joshua Tolliver. OFFICER OF THE YEAR: Member King nominates entry #2, Chairperson Garone seconds that nomination. Member Laney nominates entry #4, Member Christian seconds that nomination. Discussion ensues. The board votes 6/7 for entry#2 Det. Michelle Grogan. CIVILIAN OF THE YEAR: Member Bray nominates entry#2, Member Ball seconds that nomination. The board votes 5/7 for Mark Sulkowski. VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR: Member Laney nominates Member Murray, Member Bray seconds. Chairperson Garone nominates the Chaplin Unit, Member Christian seconds. Discussion ensues; the board votes 4/7 for the Chaplin Unit as Volunteer of the Year. DEPARTMENT UPDATES: Sgt. Iannuzzi updates the board on a fundraiser for local business owner Debra Nix, she owns Franco's Pizza. Franco's Pizza will be hosting Coffee with a Cop on February 21st. Spring Fling will be at Bill Breeze Park on March 10th. A new event to the city; American Warriors for Autism event will take place April 14th at Tiger Minor Park. Local Autism school Princeton house is sponsoring the event. First responders are paired with an Autistic child to complete an obstacle course. This is a multi-agency event,not just the City of Ocoee. On February 9th, the department's Spanish speaking officers will be holding an event at the Quadro Supermarket to meet members of the local Hispanic community. Member Laney advises the board that the OCSO will be on January 30th is sponsoring a summit on safety for houses of worship, Sgt. Iannuz7i advises she and the Chaplain Unit are attending the event. BOARD GOALS: Chairperson Garone says he made a social media page for the board, which is still a private page. The City Clerk's office will determine how the page can be used, from there on, the IS department. Chairperson Garone wants to coordinate with local HOA's to make them aware of the board and its purpose. Member King asks if the board's meeting could be announced on Next Door or Facebook. Member Christian shares neighbor feedback about department events, the daytime hours of weekday events, and location were a chief complaint. Member Christian questions how else the department can reach out to the community. Member Laney mentions the success of Cookies and Milk with a Cop and the Pop Up Games during school breaks. Sgt. Iannuzzi says Coffee with a Cop depends on a business agreeing with police presence, that some have been held in the evening hours. Chairperson Garone asks if board can cosponsor events budget wise to attend events like Coffee with a Cop, Sgt. Ianuzzi welcomes the idea. BUDGET: Current total budget is $975. GENERAL DISCUSSION: the board discusses the May Community Picnic. Chairperson Garone motions that the board use $250 towards promotional items that can be given out at the event. Member King asks if the amount should be higher, Chairperson Garone changes his motion to $300 for promotional items. Member King seconds the motion. The board passes the motion unanimously. Member King asks that in March the board open discussion about a burgers and ice cream meetup during spring break, she suggests local business That One Spot. SENIOR EVENT: Member Laney wants to schedule with the Senior Center early so there is no conflict before the holidays. Member Laney and Member Titus mention the success of the event,they both received lots of positive feedback from attendees. SET NEXT AGENDA: A. Senior event B. April events C. May event updates D.
