SUBJECT: USE OF FORFEITURE FUNDS FOR WEAPON NIGHT SIGHTS
STAFF REPORT
ISSUE
Should the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners
authorize the use of Forfeiture money to purchase Night Sights for
duty weapons.
BACKGROUND
Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics show that the majority
of all police related shootings occur during low light (Night)
situations. Based on training test conducted by our agency,
officers who have night sights on their personally owned firearms
performed at an extremely higher rate than officers without the
night sights.
DISCUSSION
As we are all aware, our society has had an increase in the amount
of crimes involving the use of firearms by criminal minded
subjects. Within our agency we have observed an increase within
the City of Ocoee as far as the use of firearms as well as
surrounding agencies by criminal minded subjects.
Thus with the growing number of firearms related crimes, the
probability of a police officer being involved in a shooting
situation has greatly increased. For officer safety as well as the
safety of our citizens and visitors, night sights are an important
tool.
RECOMMENDATION
It is respectfully recommended that the Honorable Mayor and Board
of City Commissioners approve this request to use $2,000.00 for
Night Sights to be purchased for the thirty-three firearms recently
purchased.
