WHEREAS, the noblest of causes to our human race is to be good parents; and
WHEREAS, there come times that for various reasons we find ourselves not able to fulfill
this relationship; and
WHEREAS, we sometimes must turn to others for help when we cannot help ourselves; and
WHEREAS, there are people who lend a helping hand and sacrifice for the good of others,
and particularly to help children and babies; and
WHEREAS, the foster parents program through The Childrens Home Society of Florida, a
private organization, is an outstanding example of this human kindness; and
WHEREAS, we have in our community a family who epitomizes this love, devotion, and
sacrifice; and
'WHEREAS, this family is celebrating their love and caring of their 100th foster child, as
well as having raised 4 children of their own; and
WHEREAS, one need only meet them to see that love and devotion exude from them and
know the children are in loving and caring hands, if but only temporary; and
WHEREAS, some of the children in their care are stricken with maladies or disabilities that
make no difference to these wonderful people;
NOW, THEREFORE: I, S. Scott Vandergrift, Mayor of Ocoee, Florida, do hereby
proclaim
Doris and Tom Slimick and Family
to be
OCOEE CITIZENS OF THE YEAR FOR 1994
I FURTHER PROCLAIM that the members of this family deserve all of our thanks and
acclaim for this heroic but little noticed effort to serve their fellow citizens in such an
intimately giving manner.
AND FURTHER, all parents should take their hats off to Doris and Tom, for they can truly
understand the responsibility, time, effort, and expense these truly compassionate people
have encountered and accepted willingly.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I hereunto have set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of
Ocoee, Florida to be affixed this 18th day of October, 1994.
S. Scott Vandergrift, Mayor
