RE: Vignetti Recreation Center Acoustical Wall Covering - Emergency Installation
This staff report will give information as to why the acoustical carpet was installed on the walls
at the Vignetti Recreation Center and asks your approval of the funds appropriated for the
project.
After occupying the Vignetti Recreation Center this summer it was discovered that the noise
level in the gymnasium area was very loud. The Fire Department performed a decibel test that
ranged from 90 db to 110 db. An acceptable level according to industry standards is anything
under 90 db. Information was gathered on different types of soundproofing and the decision
was made to install an acoustical wall covering. With concerns for the health and safety of the
staff and children the installation needed to be completed as soon as possible. The carpet was
installed on Saturday, July 25th and Sunday, July 26th. A retest of the sound levels produced
levels of 80 to 90 db's. The Vignetti Recreation Center staff has noticed an improvement in the
sound reduction.
The funds used were in the Recreation Department budget account 001-572-00-4300 (electric) in
the amount of$3098. The carpet was purchased from Shaw Contract Flooring and meets with
City standards for flame resistance.
The staff would like the commission to waive the approval process for the acoustical wall
covering that was installed at the Vignetti Recreation Center for the correction of a dangerous
situation and consider the action as an emergency purchase.
