Subject: Year 2000 Ocoee Calendar Contest Winners
This past summer we invited Ocoee children to submit drawings for the Year 2000 calendar. The
theme for the artwork is Water Conservation in Ocoee. The theme was developed to help promote the
POWR (Protect Ocoee's Water Resources) campaign which aims to reduce water consumption in
Ocoee by 10 percent.
Participation in the contest was terrific, thanks to the wonderful principals and teachers at Ocoee
Elementary, Spring Lake Elementary, and Ocoee Middle schools. I want to thank Ocoee Elementary
Principal Janet Quinlan, former Spring Lake Principal Sheila Johnson and current Principal Angie
Osborn, and Ocoee Middle Principal Kate Clark for passing the contest information along to their staff.
I would also like to thank Mrs. Kulik, a teacher at Ocoee Middle; Mrs. DeLillo, Mr. Warpenburg, Mrs.
Stumpf, Ms. Castle, Mrs. Geraci, Mrs. Burk, Mrs. Eld, Mrs. Hermesman, Mrs. Butkus, Miss Canty,
Mrs. Compton, and Ms. Lenkowski all teachers at Ocoee Elementary; and Mrs. Devine, Mrs.
Williamson, and Mrs. Enix who are teachers at Spring Lake. These teachers took the time to explain
the contest to their students and help them create some really wonderful drawings.
All together, the City received 127 entries. Mayor Vandergrift, Cathy Sills (Utility Billing Customer
Service Supervisor), Jeanne Washington (Utilities Department Administrative Secretary), Pat Smith
(Administrative Secretary, City Manager's Department), and I judged all the entries based on age of
the artist, how well the picture captured the essence of the subject matter they were trying to illustrate,
and originality. Needless to say, it was a very difficult task and I want to thank the Mayor, Cathy,
Jeanne, and Pat for taking the job so seriously.
Lastly, on behalf of the Mayor, Commissioners, and staff, we want to especially thank all the children
for doing such a terrific job with their drawings! Each and every one of the students submitted a
wonderful work of art while learning valuable lessons on conserving water. As a token of
appreciation, the City is providing a small gift for each child.
Attached are the names of the 12 winners whose artwork will appear on the calendar. The subject
matter of their drawings is included beside their name. Before the Commission meeting, these children
will have their photograph taken with their teachers and the Mayor. This photograph will be displayed
on the back cover of the calendar. We would like to recognize the children during the City
Commission meeting.

Protect Ocoee's Water Resources
Year 2000 Ocoee Calendar Contest Winners
1. Carina Cooper Draw a colorful design using the City's POWR(Protect Ocoee's Water
Resources)logo as the focus of the picture.
2. Brandi Hazen Draw a picture where people are outside smiling up at the rain. (We
want people to know that rain is a wonderful thing because it
replenishes the aquifer where we get out water!)
3. Matthew Snell Draw a leaky faucet-a faucet with drops coming out of it. (We will be
letting people know that a faucet leaking one droplet per second can
waste more than 7 gallons of water per day!)
4. Allis Czerepka Draw a picture of a water sprinkler attached to a hose in the yard,
spraying out a beautiful fountain of water droplets. (We will be
asking people to only water their lawns before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m.)
5. Matt Rentz Draw a yard with lots of trees and colorful bushes and mulch around
the trees and bushes. (We want to encourage people to use a lot of
plants that do not require a lot of water, and to have many plants
instead of all grass in their yards because that saves water.)
6. Ashley Santiago Draw a picture that shows a wastebasket full of tissues and a few
insects-a spider and another type of bug. (We want to encourage
people to throw things in a wastebasket instead of flushing them
down the toilet.) Try to include a toilet next to the wastebasket
if you can.)
7. Mary Patton Draw a picture of a person brushing his or her teeth. The picture
should also show the sink with NO drops coming out of the faucet.
(We want to encourage people to turn the water off while brushing
their teeth.)
8. Ashley Santiago Draw a picture of a washing machine with the lid open and some
clothes that show that you have filled it up to the top. (We want
to encourage people to have a full load before running the
washing machine.)
9. Lisa Thatcher Draw a picture of a happy water droplet or two happy water droplets.
10. Kristin Schroeder Write the words Protect Ocoee's Water Resources as large as
possible on a piece of regular size paper. Then decorate the words
with lots of colors and designs.
11. Jennifer Spangler Draw a picture that shows someone standing outside on the grass,but
underneath the grass include a layer of brown dirt, a layer of red dirt(clay),
a layer of rocks, and then a layer of water. (We want people to be reminded
of where their water comes from.)
12. Ryan Alexander Draw a happy person drinking a glass of water.
13. Samantha Briggs Draw people in a swimming pool having lots of fun.
