Parker, District 4 STAFF REPORT TO: The l lonorable Mayor and City Commissioners FROM: Janet Shira, Assistant to the City Manager DATE: July 17, 2003 RE: 2004 Ocoee Community Calendar—Theme for Photos ISSUE City staff is beginning to plan for production of the 2004 Ocoee Community Calendar. To meet the deadlines to have the calendar available in late December 2003, we must have all the photographs and text information no later than mid October. This allows time for the graphic designers to produce the actual layout, have everything proofed, and then go to print. BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION Staff has put together a few ideas for the theme for the upcoming calendar. The intent is to have the Commission select a theme no later than the September 2nd City Commission meeting, and then stall will solicit proposals from professional photographers to be ready to award the job as soon as the new budget year begins. Some possible options for the theme include: I. Promoting and Acknowledging Community Volunteerism: Examples could be: a Health Central Auxiliary volunteer assisting a patient, Rotary Club members fitting helmets on children, a Little League coach practicing with the team, a Girl or Boy Scout Leader with the troop, a Mentor working with a school student,a City board volunteer at a meeting or activity, etc. 2. Native and Drought Tolerant Trees and other Plants: Photographs of beautifully flowering bushes, vines, and groundcovers and various trees and flowers that thrive in this area. Showing residents that native or drought tolerant doesn't mean cactus and rocks. We could also include with the photos information on the plants(mature height, width, whether it prefers sun or shade, etc.)as well as tips to reduce water use through improved irrigation systems and practices. 3. Ocoee Residents and their Stories of Inspiration: Solicit nominations from the community during the month of September(use the News To You, West Orange Times, city web site,etc.). Examples could be someone who has achieved an important life goal (running a marathon, climbing a mountain); someone who has overcome a hardship or disability to accomplish great things; someone who has worked hard to get to the top of their profession; a student who has beat the odds; etc. We would feature a photograph of each of these people(Ocoee residents) on each month along with their story. If the City Commission wants to pursue this option, staff requests that a vote be taken on August 5th so that an article call be put in the News To You. RECOMMENDATION Staff respectfully requests that the City Commission provide direction on what they would like to see as a theme for the 2004 Community Calendar no later than September 2id.
