TO: Key Officials FROM: Michael Sittig, Executive Director DATE: July 16, 2003 SUBJECT: PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO FLORIDA LEAGUE OF CITIES' CHARTER As required by Article VII of the charter of the Florida League of Cities, this letter serves as official notification of a proposed amendment to the League's charter. The City of North Port has advised the League they intend to propose the following amendment, which if adopted, would limit the membership of the Florida League of Cities to cities, towns and villages. Currently membership in the Florida League of Cities also includes Charter Counties (of which six are members). Article III - Membership, Voting and Dues - Section 1. The membership of this corporation shall be limited to governmental agencies rendering municipal services. municipalities - cities, towns and villages incorporated by special action of the legislature as provided in FS- 165.041 and Article VIII, Section II of the Florida Constitution. The Board of Directors of the Florida League of Cities has informed the City of North Port of their opposition to this proposed charter amendment and has encouraged the City of North Port to withdraw the proposal. The City of North Port has indicated they will not withdraw it. The debate and vote will take place during the regular annual business session of the Florida League of Cities on Saturday, August 16, 2003 immediately following the Past Presidents' Luncheon at the Wyndham Palace in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. This business session will be held in conjunction with the 77th Annual Conference of the Florida League of Cities scheduled at the same location August 14 - 16, 2003. Please advise the members of your governing body of this proposal (especially your Florida League of Cities' voting delegate). We have attached a voting delegate form if you need one.
