Good morning,
The Florida League of Cities recently announced that the 2021 Legislative Action Day program, previously scheduled for
April 7-8, 2021,will no longer be held in-person and is moving to a virtual format.Therefore,we will not be hosting the
in-person Youth Council program on April 7-8,2021. Instead,we would like to host a one-day virtual event for youth
councils sometime in March or April. In order to do this, I would like to ask for your feedback on times/days that work
for your council. Please see the description of the virtual program below, along with a few questions to help guide us at
the bottom of this email.Thank you for your time.
Youth Council Virtual Event
We've all watched the national political dialogue deteriorate over the last several years and especially the last few
months. It can seem that Americans simply can't talk to each other about the things that matter most for our nation's
future ... or the world's.
But we can. With the right skills, and the right spirit,we can listen and talk across even deeply-entrenched differences.
Through meaningful conversations,we probably won't change our minds about many things, but we probably can find
things we can accomplish together for the good of the public.
Led by our regular teacher and guide, Dr.Scott Paine,this youth council virtual event will focus on that mission.
Elements it may include:
• A short workshop on skills for having difficult conversations
• Small-group practice sessions with youth from all over the state
• Youth council-based brainstorming and planning for efforts to foster conversations in our own cities,schools,
neighborhoods... even families
• Special guests to share their experiences of having the tough public conversations
Now we needyour guidance.To do all of this aind make it work will take time. /Ike you iateriested in°
• A full-day program (e.g., 9 or 10 a.m.to 3 or 4 pm)
• A half-day program (9-12 or 1-4)
• What day of the week? (We are investigating whether you might be able to have your participation in this virtual
program treated as an excused absence from school.)
