The Route: The route to the lake: In the late 1880's July Perry, Mose Norman, and Valentine Hightower got off a mule -train wagon from South Carolina and walked across downtown to what we know as Starke Lake. As you retrace their initial steps in silence, honor in your heart these men, and many more, whose dreams and hopes were for a brighter future. Along Starke Lake: Oral history says that the bodies of many murdered black residents were dumped in this lake. As we walk along in silence, recognize that this was the tragic final resting place for many victims. The White Church: There were 3 churches in Ocoee at the time, 2 of them were burned down that day, but this one remained, Ocoee Christian Church provided refuge and sanctuary for some of the fleeing black residents. The church was surrounded by the Klan. Miraculously it wasn't burned to the ground, but was shot up instead. The Old Cross: As we walk out lock at the original cross that was on the steeple of Ocoee Christian Church during that time. Notice the three bullet holes from November 2nd, 1920. 100 Bell Tolls: The original bell from Ocoee Christian Church will ring 100 times. One hundred rings signifying the 100 years that this tragedy was pushed from public discourse. The Candle -Memorial with 53 Candles: There are 53 candles placed at the end of our walk to honor the memory of those who were killed, There are shamefully no complete official records of who died or how many died in the Ocoee Election Day Massacre. Our best estimation is 53. For those whose names seemed to have been lost in history, tonight we bring them out of the dark and say we will keep the light of their memory by never letting such darkness overshadow our community again.
