Owens Submitted To Orange County Regional History Center Orlando, FL Regarding the Ocoee Memorial Sculpture Maquette included In the exhibit entitled "Yesterday This Was Home" I am a professional artist based in central Florida. My interest in the Ocoee Massacre dates back to 1993 when I met with Stetson Kennedy in his home to discuss my plan to create a small memorial sculpture He graciously allowed me to copy everything he had collected on the subject I completed the sculpture but was inexperienced and my budget was not sufficient to build an object that would survive indefinitely outdoors That sculpture no longer exists. Every few years I puff out the Ocoee Massacre file, tinker with the design and ponder its construction Then the "wolf at the door" returns and I put the file back I am neither a historian nor an academic and yet I live in my mind with the constant awareness that the lens through which I view life has been changed by my knowledge of this and other atrocities. Sometimes, I make art as a way of thinking about subject matter This is not a generational thing To borrow language from Hunter S Thompson You don't even have to know what the Ocoee Massacre was to have been substantially affected by it. Without truth and reconciliation "we have poison in our water forever" If the philosophers were correct - if an epoch may be truly understood only when it is over then the greatest lessons of the American Century may be for us to team in this century Exhibits and public art projects are an opportunity to see history from another angle retell the stories and apply their lessons in the here and now as the struggle to understand the truth of our world continues. Overview This proposal includes the design of a one -of -a -kind sculpture in memory of the Ocoee Massacre (the "Sculpture") that is suitable for permanent installation outdoors A Preliminary Design already exists in the form of sketches and a maquette General Description of the Sculpture * Height. 11 feet, Width. 32 — 36 inches, Estimated weight. 850 LB * The surface shall be accurate but rough not smooth Edges shall be rugged but not sharp * The relief sculpture (named the "Voter') includes craters resulting from actual rifle fire This will be done under proper safety conditions and documented * The Flame shall be a sculpted form, not an actual flame or "eternal flame" * For permanent connection onto a flat and level surface (the "Site") to be provided by the Client. * Includes technical drawings, a template for drilling mounting holes and the connectors needed to complete the installation Coloration * The Body and Plaque shall be made entirely of bronze that is colored to achieve an off-white stone- like appearance * Both the Voter (the relief sculpture) and Flame shall be made of bronze colored to have a steel like appearance Unpolished and silvery but weathered and partially oxidized Description of Other Artist Services * The Artist shall provide technical drawings that include specifications and recommendations related to the installation, a template for drilling mounting holes and the stainless steel connectors • The Artist shall deliver the Sculpture to the Site on a dedicated truck and be present as an advisor when installed by the Client. • The Artist shall manage all tasks needed to complete and deliver the Sculpture The Installation Site and Installation * The Client shall develop the Site Typically, this involves making a steel reinforced concrete pad * The Client shall drill mounting holes, lift the Sculpture from the Artist's delivery truck and install it onto the Site at the Client's expense The Working Method The protect shall be divided into 2 or 3 phases with well defined goals for each phase and governed by a written Agreement that the Artist shall provide Timeline The Artist shall need 18 months from the date he receives the down -payment to complete and deliver the Sculpture The Price Price' $146,138 The Price includes all materials, supplies, foundry expenses, travel and delivery expenses and Artist services The Price does not include sales tax.
