Automotive, Inc.
Background Summary:
The Fire department recently generated $197,500 from the sale of two surplus 1994 KME pumpers and one
surplus 1996 Pierce Dash aerial truck. The initial intent of the funds was to purchase and equip one (1) new
transport capable rescue truck. A rescue truck committee composing of Fire Department and Public Works
Fleet Maintenance Division personnel was formed to research and develop the specifications and equipment
list for the transport capable unit. After their evaluation of the current Fire Department needs and the most
effective use of the available funds, the committee determined that the purchase of two (2) used transport
capable rescue trucks rather than one (1) new truck would be best. This would allow for a primary in- service
unit and a back -up reserve unit to both be available and fully equipped at all times. Further, the purchase of the
two (2) used trucks with all new equipment is approximately the same cost as one (1) new truck without
equipment.
Both units will be housed at Fire Station 25 with one (1) unit in- service replacing the current ALS Rescue Squad
25 utility truck. That transport capable unit will respond in addition to the closest ALS Engine Company on high
level ALS calls, such as cardiac arrests, and incidents where the extended arrival time of normal commercial
transport may compromise patient care. It will also respond on structure fires and auto accidents. The second
unit purchased will be kept in a fully equipped reserve status ready to be placed in service as needed to replace
the primary unit. It will also be available for other potential needs, such as disasters and special event medical
stand -bys currently staffed by non -city commercial entities.
Issue:
The rescue truck committee is recommending the purchase of the following two (2) used transport capable
rescue trucks from Island Classic Automotive, Inc for a total of $50,450 :
• 2003 Freightliner FL -60 Wheeled Coach Ambulance: $22,850
• 2004 Freightliner FL -60 Wheeled Coach Ambulance: $27,600
Both units have been thoroughly examined, road tested and recommended for purchase by both Fire
Department and Fleet Maintenance personnel.

Recommendations:
Staff recommends the City Commission approve the purchase of the 2003 and 2004 Freightliner FL -60
Wheeled Coach Ambulances by the Fire Department.
