Background Summary:
The City Manager notified the Commission at the March 4 2014 meeting, that sometime on or before
February 20 the Maguire Road bridge was struck by an over height vehicle traveling on the Turnpike,
damaging several bridge beams. The damage does not affect the structural capacity, however the long
term integrity of the bridge requires emergency repairs. The City expedited this process by contracting
with the State bridge inspection firm, Volkert, for a repair design and procedure. Following completion
of the design, Public Works solicited pricing from FDOT approved repair contractors. Three (3)
contractors responded with Southland Construction, Inc., of Apopka, Florida, providing the lowest price
of $47,000.00. Southland's price was within $850.00 of the next lowest bidder.
The award of the repair work falls within the guidelines of the City's Emergency Purchases Policy,
however the timing of the award coincides with the Commission meeting and Public Works is requesting
Commission approval of the repair work with Southland in order to maintain the expedited process of
completing the bridge repairs. The repair costs will be funded from the road paving account.
Issue:
Request the City Commission award the Maguire Road emergency bridge repairs to Southland
Construction, Inc.
Recommendations:
Recommend to approve the Maguire Road bridge emergency repairs in the amount of $47,000.00 with
Southland Construction, Inc., of Apopka, Florida.
