Background Summary:
The approved city budget has included replacing the Fire Department fire hoses that were more than 10 years
old and unserviceable. The Fire Department is requesting the Commission approve the donation of surplus
hose (60 sections of 2 % inch, 40 sections of 1 3/4 inch and 3 sections of 5 inch fire hose) to the
Monticello Volunteer Fire Department. They are a small volunteer fire department in the Florida
panhandle that still uses hose which is over 25 years old.
Issue:
Request the Commission donate 60 sections of 2 1/2 inch, 40 sections of 1 3/ inch and 3 sections of 5
inch fire hose to the Monticello Volunteer Fire Department in the Florida panhandle.
Recommendations
Staff recommends the approval of the Commission to donate 60 sections of 2 1/2 inch, 40 sections of 1 %
inch and 3 sections of 5 inch fire hose to the Monticello Volunteer Fire Department.

Dear Chief Miller,
During our recent meeting you mentioned that you were replacing the hose on your units due to your
replacement schedule. I ask about the possibility of your donating some of the hose to the Monticello
Volunteer Fire Department and you indicated you would be willing to see if that was a possibility. I want
to follow up to see if there was a possibility of us obtaining some of the hose you are disposing of. We
keep our hose tested to NFPA standard and when it fails it comes out of service. We still have some 25
year old hose in service which concerns me greatly but we haven't been in a position to purchase any
new in recent years.
Any consideration you might be able to help with we would appreciate. We currently have a mix of 3
inch and 21/2 inch hose for supply line and use 1 1/2 and 13/4 inch for attack lines. Our water system
is old, so we do not have a lot of use for 5 inch but could utilize two or three sections to be able to set
up a ground monitor should we need to do so.
Your favorable consideration will help provide our firefighters with safer tools to work with as they
protect the citizens of our small city in this rural county.
