SUBJECT: PURCHASE OF TELETYPE TERMINAL AND PRINTER FOR USE BY
THE POLICE DEPARTMENT USING LAW ENFORCEMENT TRUST FUND
MONEY

ISSUE
Should the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners
approve the purchase of an FCIC/NCIC terminal and printer for the
Police Department ' s Communication Section.
BACKGROUND
In order to receive and transmit messages on the FCIC/NCIC
network a terminal and printer is required . The Police
Department currently has the equipment , but the equipment is
approximately twenty (20) years old and is owned by Florida
Department of Law Enforcement (F.D.L.E.). Parts are no longer
available in the event it needs to be repaired. The parts that
are used are rebuilt ones with limited reliability.
DISCUSSION
The present terminal and printer are under an extended service
contract providing twenty-four (24) hour service protection in
the event that repairs are needed. This contract is currently
with F.D.L.E. As of February 15 , 1991 , they will no longer
provide twenty-four (24) hour service. In order to continue with
round the clock protection we are now forced to go to other
venders. The cost to provide this level of protection would be
$ 1 ,750 per year for the terminal and $ 1 , 175 per year for the
printer (total of $2 , 925 per year for both pieces of equipment) .
A new terminal and printer would only cost $ 1 ,344 plus an
additional $308 (approximately) for twenty-four (24) hour service
protection for both pieces of equipment .
RECOMMENDATION
It is respectfully recommended that the Honorable Mayor and Board
of City Commissioners approve the purchase of a new terminal and
printer using money from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund .
