Item II (A-3) Presentations and Proclamations - 19-27, 1991 as National Red Ribbon Week AGENDA 10-1-91 Item II A 3 CITY OF OCOEE PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, alcohol and other drug abuse in this nation has reached epidemic stages; and WHEREAS, it is imperative that visible, unified prevention education efforts by community members be launched to eliminate the demand for drugs; and WHEREAS, the National Federation of Parents for Drug Free Youth, Inc., Florida Informed Parents for Drug Free Youth Inc., and the City of Ocoee are sponsoring the NATIONAL RED RIBBON CAMPAIGN offering citizens the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to drug-free lifestyles (no use of illegal drugs, no illegal use of legal drugs); and WHEREAS, local leaders, in government and in the community, know that the support of the people in the neighborhoods is the most effective weapon they can have in their efforts to reduce the demand for illegal drugs and drive away the suppliers of those drugs; and WHEREAS, the NATIONAL RED RIBBON CAMPAIGN will be celebrated in every community in America during "RED RIBBON WEER,"October 19-27, 1991, to help create awareness of the drug problems facing every community, to develop parent and community teams to combat illegal drugs, and to promote drug-free lifestyles for America's youth; and WHEREAS, President and Mrs. George Bush are the National Honorary Chairmen, and Governor and Mrs. Lawton Chiles are the Florida Honorary Chairmen, and Mr. and Mrs. Pete Dagostino are the Central Florida Chairmen to provide national, state and local focus on a drug-free America; and WHEREAS, all segments of the community will be represented and demonstrate their commitment to healthy, drug-free lifestyles by wearing and displaying red ribbons during this week-long campaign; and WHEREAS, the City of Ocoee further commits its resources to ensure the success of the RED RIBBON CAMPAIGN; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Lester Dabbs, Jr., Mayor of the City of Ocoee, do hereby proclaim October 19-27, 1991 as NATIONAL RED RIBBON WEEK in this City, and encourage all citizens to wear red ribbons throughout that week in support of a drug-free America; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all businesses, public and private agencies, media, religious and educational institutions are called upon to join with the City in the promotion of NATIONAL RED RIBBON WEEK and in the encouragement of all employees and citizens to show their support for a drug-free America. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Ocoee, Florida to be affixed at Ocoee this 1st day of October, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and ninety-one.
