Background Summary: This year, $10,549.00 has been made available for the City of Ocoee Police Department through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG). The Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Formula Program Committee wishes to submit the attached 51% Letter to the Office of Criminal Justice Grants in Tallahassee. This letter lists the various programs for which the participating law enforcement agencies in Orange County plan to spend the $322,517.00 allocated to them. The letter and accompanying grant application must be signed by the Mayor. If approved, the City of Ocoee will receive $10,549.00 to purchase Forensic Equipment for Crime Scene Unit. Issue: Should the Honorable Mayor and Board of City Commissioners authorize the Mayor to sign the 51% Letter and grant application allowing the Police Department to apply for $10,549.00 that has been made available for the Ocoee Police Department through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) to purchase Forensic Equipment for Crime Scene Unit? Since the Orange County Sheriff's Office and the Orlando Police Department receive the majority of the JAGC grant funds,both the Sheriff of Orange County and Chief of the Orlando Police Department reallocates some of their funds to the smaller law enforcement municipalities to reach the maximum of$10,000 for their project needs. As of this date,Florida Department of Law Enforcement(FDLE)is still waiting for approval on the FY17 JAG funding application by DOJ Office of Justice Programs(OJP). Due to the JAG funding delays,the grants office would like to get ahead of the application process. In order to meet the 51%requirement pertaining to State of Florida Rule 11D-9,F.A.C.,the grants office needs to start the strategic planning efforts of JAGC.
